A pair of national team players from St. Albert led the Edmonton Inferno to a record fifth-straight Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League women's championship last weekend in Montreal. With veteran guard Jen Krempien and post Tara Feser in the line-up, Inferno handily defeated the BC Breakers in the final after losing to them by three points in the round robin. Next weekend Krempien and Feser will compete in the first ever women's provincial team Canadian championship in Coquitlam, B.C. Krempien will play for British Columbia and Feser is on the Alberta roster. The tournament will use the 14-point system, the same as in international basketball, compared to 17 points at the recent club championship. In wheelchair basketball, classifications range from 1.0 to 4.5 based ont eh player's level of ability. At the international level the five players on the floor per team must add up to 14 points. Krempien is a 1.0 player with no trunk muscles. She is unable to rotate because of a spinal cord injury. Feser is a 4.5 player with full mobility while sitting. She can't run or jump after surgery to her right knee cap. One of her legs is also shorter than the other by an inch and a half. After the provincial team championship, Krempien and Feser have a busy schedule lined up as Team Canada prepares for the Sept. 6-17 Paralympics for disabled athletes in Beijing, China. Major events include the Roosevelt Cup in Georgia, North American Cup in Alabama, exhibition tour in Germany and a tournament in Toronto. Feser, 28, was among 19 athletes invited to the recent Team Canada selection camp in Calgary and was one of two newcomers to crack the 12-player roster. Krempien, 33, a decorated national team mainstay since 1992, is a three-time Paralympic gold medallist and four-time Gold Cup world champion. She plans to retire from international competition following her fifth Paralympics at the Beijing games. |
