The City of Edmonton's Salute to Excellence Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at the
Francis Winspear Centre for Music on Wednesday, June 13th at 7:30 p.m.

Mayor Stephen Mandel is pleased to announce the 2007 City of Edmotnon Hall of Fame inductees.

Arts and Culture: Madge McCready, Walter Jule

Sports: Orv Franchuk, Danielle Peers, Don Horwood Leigh McMillan

Community Service: Dianne & Irving Kipnes, Rev. Dr. Donald Mayne,Krishan Joshee & Margaret Andrekson

City of Edmonton Salute to Excellence Hall of Fame Inductees – 2007

Madge McCready – Arts and Culture Hall of Fame
Ms. McCready is a builder in the Edmonton, provincial and national choral music communities.
• She has developed quality music programs in the choral and vocal areas.
• She has contributed to the annual music festivals in Edmonton and beyond as an adjudicator and clinician.
• Her most significant contribution was the development of the Alberta choral Federation.

Walter Jule – Arts and culture Hall of Fame
Walter Jule is an artist and builder in the visual arts community, particularly in printmaking.
• He played an instrumental role in building an internationally acclaimed centre for printmaking in Edmonton.
• He has edited countless publications on printmaking and the visual arts.
• He is an acclaimed artist.
• He has provided invaluable input to various arts events and organizations in the artistic community in Edmonton.
• He is sought after as a juror and speaker at major exhibitions and conferences around the world.

Krishan Chandra Joshee – Community Service Hall of Fame
Mr. Joshee is a leader in the development of educational and cultural programs in Edmonton.
• He has been instrumental in bringing together the diverse cultures that make up the Edmonton mosaic to work together in harmony and peace.
• He was a founding member of the Edmonton Heritage Festival Association.

Reverend Dr. Donald Mayne – Community Service Hall of Fame
Reverend Mayne has undertaken numerous activities over the last four decades to promote social justice, interfaith understanding and respect, seniors’ issues, and housing for the needy.
• He is the founding president of the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action.
• He has served on the Alberta Council on Aging, the Senior Citizens Housing Task Force, and the Greater Edmonton Foundation: Housing for Seniors, to name a few.

Margaret Weir Andrekson – Community Service Hall of Fame
Margaret Weir Andrekson has provided exemplary volunteer work and leadership in the areas of health, education, social welfare and the arts.
• She has served on the Boards of the Edmonton Symphony Society, the Alberta Ballet Company, the University of Alberta Museums, the University of Alberta Board of Governors, the University Senate, the Alberta College of Art and Design, the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Winspear Foundation and numerous others.
• She is recognized as a mentor, a mover, a founder, a builder and an advocate with a broad understanding of Alberta and Edmonton.

Dianne and Irving Kipnes – Community Service Hall of Fame
The community leadership of Dianne and Irv Kipnes extends to youth development, health care, the arts and the Jewish community.
• They have supported the Kids in the Hall program and iHuman.
• Dr. Kipnes has served on the Capital Care Foundation, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, she founded the St. Valentine’s Dinner established to support the Dianne and Irving Kipnes Centre for Veterans, and has served on the Board of Directors of Edmonton Opera.
• Mr. Kipnes serves on the Board of Trustees, University Hospital Foundation, Heart Institute Campaign and served on the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Symphony, is the founding Director of the Jewish Community Centre, has been a Board member of the United Jewish Appeal and the Beth Shalom Synagogue.
• They both have served on the HealthSmart Solutions Campaign.
• The Dianne and Irving Kipnes Foundation provides financial support to many Edmonton community groups and initiatives.

Don Horwood – Sports Hall of Fame
Mr. Horwood has been a builder of sport development in Edmonton, particularly, basketball.
• For 24 years he has been the Head coach of the University of Alberta Men’s Basketball team. He is one of the longest serving CIS coaches in Canada and at the University.
• His never wavering commitment to excellence and hard work has filtered down into many of his former players, who have long graduated and become strong leaders in our community.

Danielle Peers – Sports Hall of Fame
Danielle Peers is a world champion wheelchair athlete.
• She was an outstanding high school basketball player and won the Academic All Canadian while being team captain of the Grant MacEwan basketball team.
• Muscular Dystrophy has left Danielle relatively wheelchair bound. She turned adversity into opportunity to make groundbreaking achievements in both men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball.
• She has been a National Ambassador for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
• She was the first woman to be named to the American Men’s All Star Team and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player at the Men’s European Cup of Wheelchair Baskeball.

Orville Franchuk- Sports Hall of Fame
Mr. Franchuk is recognized as an athlete and builder of sports in Edmonton.
• He played for the Edmonton Tigers and then went on to coach and field manage the team.
• He conducted numerous baseball schools and clinics, motivating young baseball athletes to challenge themselves on and off the playing field.

Leigh McMillan – Sports Hall of Fame
Mr. McMillan has played football and hockey at the highest levels.
• He played professional football for the Edmonton Eskimos and played for the University of Alberta Golden Bears Hockey Team.
• He has also coached football and hockey. He has been an assistant coach with the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team and has coached at the High School level. He coached various levels of minor hockey.
